Pitching Velocity Specificity

July 19, 2011

Pitching Velocity SpecificityPitching Velocity Specificity is based around two variables; pitching mechanics and physical fitness. The baseball world has a descent understanding of how important sound pitching mechanics are in producing an above average pitcher but they have very little understanding of how effective physical fitness is in producing an above average pitcher.

This has a lot to do with the trickle down theory. Most of baseball gets their education from Major League Baseball. The problem with the MLB is that they are made up of an elite group of athletes. Therefore the league does not have to spend a lot of time in physical development of their players because everyone they acquire is already developed. This is why they draft athletes over baseball players. If you want proof just look at the 2000 MLB draft when the Colorado Rookies Drafted Michael Vick in the 30th round. The last time Michael Vick played baseball was in the 8th grade. They drafted him because he is one of the best athletes in the country. The MLB would rather draft athletes than just baseball players because they know it is easier to turn an athlete into a pitcher than a pitcher into an athlete. This is why the MLB has very little knowledge and experience in physical fitness and development. So why does all the levels under the MLB look to them for guidance in physical fitness and development? Good question! Read more

Baseball’s 6th Tool

July 15, 2011

By Mark Brooks

Since the Earliest baseball legends began breaking records, transforming into heroes and inspiring nations, there was an element to these player’s success that for the most part have been overlooked by society in how their success is achieved in the game of baseball.

I’m talking about a tool that the greatest players have utilized whether they have known it or not. It’s more powerful than having a cannon for an arm because it can help you achieve it. It’s more consistent than speed and even more dangerous than incredible hand eye coordination. It fact it will give the talent to be a great hitter that none of the best baseball hitting drills can even think to offer. Read more

The John Madden of Pitching Instruction

July 11, 2011

John MaddenThe more and more I read the information coming from another online pitching coach, who I will refer to as DM to avoid naming names, the more he reminds me of John Madden. You know when John Madden makes those quotes during Monday night football that make you wonder if he is totally aware of what he just said? I get this feeling with DM a lot.

For example, I just read his last email because I am on his subscriber list which means I get an email a day. The email was titled, “Does strength training really increase velocity? This study provides the proof.” He goes on to fumble around and say,”Velocity comes mainly from the forces produced that allow the trunk to rotate and flex forward fast and powerfully…..Weight training will mostly waste valuable time.” I would like to ask DM, but he doesn’t allow commenting on his website, so you are saying that using weight training to increase your bodies ability to produce force or power, is a waste of time? What? DM, are you actually reading what you are writing? He continues on in the email to make a serious bogus claim. Read more

Force Vector Pitching

July 9, 2011

Force Vector Pitching, Pitching Force VectorIs your pitching coach teaching the force vector?

More than likely your Pitching Coach has no idea what Force Vector Pitching is and why it is so critical for velocity. I would love to see the look on his face when you ask him what force vector pitching is and why is it so important.

I have talked about the Pitching Force Vector many times on this site and in my analysis. It is also in the 3X Pitching Velocity program and the fact is, I really can’t talk about this critical component enough. Read more

How to Prevent Youth Pitching Injuries?

July 8, 2011

How to Prevent Youth Pitching Injuries? In an effort to help prevent youth pitching injuries the American Sports Medicine Institute has posted their Position Statement for Youth Baseball Pitchers. The three major factors which is a primary cause of most youth pitching injuries is; overuse, poor mechanics and poor physical fitness as mentioned in this statement. In my own research, I find this to be the case in all levels of the game. It is just more important at the youth level.

The Position Statement also mentions that the use of the curveball at the youth level may be an issue but no research exactly shows why. ASMI states that the problems could be that throwing a curveball enhances the effects of the three major factors of primary injury for youth pitchers. Here is a list of their recommendations for preventing injury. Read more
