Brent:  when I measure Evan's stride (he's 6 feet tall), he hits about 6'9" on average (from rubber to tip of his toe).  And he seems to have pretty good control (I'm going to post another video later this week now that he's done with Level I).  When he threw with the team today, the artificial mound was about 6'6" (with a 2" lip), he pulled up short with his front foot, and everything was sailing high.  When I explained what I thought was the problem to the coach, he thought Evan's stride was too long since no one else on the team was having problems staying on the mound.  What are your thoughts?  Should we try to work on a shorter stride, or just adjust for differences in the mound but keep focusing on striding to his normal distance?  Thanks,  John

No coach should every advise a pitcher to shorten his stride in my book. That is like telling him to not throw so hard to the catcher. Could you imagine what Nolan Ryan would have said to his pitching coach if his pitching coach would have told him to shorten his stride.

We are only focusing on stride length once the pitcher is able to move from the "Load" position into 3X correctly, with power. If the pitcher is only focused on reaching out with the lift leg to extend his stride, instead of focusing on a good load into 3X to build optimal stride power then this is a problem. The solution here is not shortening the stride. The solution is to focus on building your stride with explosive 3X.

Send in video for analysis and I will see if his stride is the result of his lift leg reaching or his drive leg achieving 3X before front foot strike.
