here is a before and after change with my son Nicolas.  since the change, he has gotten more consistent, but can't throw over 64mph.  before the change, Nicolas was topping out at 73mph.  the changes were necessary and he does look good, but it would be nice to get some of that speed back.

the change had to do with the way he was loading has drive knee back over his foot.  he was throwing his front leg towards the target instead of driving with his back leg.  he was also doing a quick hip shift to get separation instead of pushing his hip open with his drive leg.  he had to concentrate to keep all of those mechanics working, and i usually had to remind him of a bunch of tips/thoughts to get everything working.  he could throw anywhere from 56mph-72mph and he couldn't tell you how fast he just threw the ball.

after working with Brent over the last 3-4 months, Nicolas has gotten much better and stronger…but he still hasn't hit his growth spurt yet.  Nicolas is still 12 years old, 5'3" and 100lbs.  he tends to take after me genetically, and i'm 225lbs and 6'5".  if he gets my height and continues with the 3x program, he will be a monster!

anyways, take a look at the video comparison and let me know if there is something he can do to get some of that speed back.  the biggest thing that i see is that his back gets more flat as he releases the ball, and he moves quicker through the zone.

another thing i see is that Nicolas throws slower from a mound.  maybe just weak legs, like most youth.  i believe Brent is right, the mounds shouldn't be used at that age.

Yes, probably the mound, but other than that, I think he is slower in the 60mph and his arm isn't firing as fast. Also, he stalls out in the middle of his delivery. Check out kevin votaw's analysis. Brent covers the stalling out issue I believe. Hopefully my mind is right :P. Also, let the lead leg close off. I believe this may be one of the factors why you are stalling out. Because it becomes a reach more than a drive. He does close off his leg well though. He also somehow gets his force vector aligned. Or maybe I'm just seeing things. but the major problem is probably the stalling and time difference :D

Oh yes, he also doesn't get as much forward lean as before. Probably because of the timing issue ;D.

Just curious, what kind of ball is he throwing in the indoor video?   I do know that kids can throw tennis balls or other rubber or foam balls significantly than a baseball (both due to grip improvement since the ball is smaller and "squishier," and the weight of ball is less so it goes faster if you apply the same amount of force)… A couple of years ago, I clocked a couple of 10 year olds throwing a rubber ball and the speed was consistently about 10 MPH faster than a baseball.

Looks more like a baseball to me. It could be a wiffle, but I'm sure when gunning velocity you use the same ball. ;P

Just wondering…'cause it looks like he's throwing in their living room (and my wife would kill me if we were throwing real baseballs in our living room, which is why we have a big basement!). Wink

the ball is actually a dryer ball, which is about the same size, but a little lighter.  he throws into the cushion crack of the coach with a bunch of pillows surrounding the top of the couch to keep it from breaking a window.  we found that he actually throws about the same speed either outside with a real ball or inside with the dryer ball.

i agree with the stalling out assessment.  you can see he has more linear movement when he throws faster.  the big thing that he changed was how he gets his hips open.  before, he simply whipped them open like you would when batting;  now he pushes the hips open with his back leg through triple extension.  i just don't think he is strong enough in the legs yet.
