i am posting this video of my son Nicolas for analysis. having watched some of Brent's training videos and speaking over a couple of emails, this is the resultant pitching technique. he has much more power and control, but i am worried about the strong posting of the left landing leg. should he have a bent knee to absorb the energy or allow his leg to straighten up?
Thanks for the post. His front leg looks fine. You want to land with a strong front leg but bent. It can then begin to straighten as his weight shifts forward and his leg continues to stablize.
The main issue I see is that Nic is dragging his arm and not letting his arm externally rotate. This puts more wear and tear on the shoulder. This is happening because he is not thrusting his chest towards the target. Instead he is pulling his glove down and across which is dragging his arm around to release.
here is an updated video. it was cold today so he did a little "couch pitching". he likes to throw a dryer ball into the crack of the couch. i think he likes the loud whosh it makes when he throws.
he has worked hard to get that arm lag under control. i'm not sure about a couple of things on this video:
1) is it still an arm lag or just a straight arm drop with very closed choulders now. the other day we spent an hour just on arm lag issues. he has to concentrate to stop it.
2) is he crouching during the stride? i worry about him having his butt too far out to fire his hips and chest correctly.
3) is he getting maximum momentum? i'm thinking not. too me, this looks too much like his last season pitching. it's really hard to relearn everything and not revert back to the old "feel" i guess.
he threw a ton of hard strikes the other day, so i feel good about that. the only soreness he is feeling the next day is in his butt, legs, and stomach. i feel pretty good about that also. let me know what you think.
I see improvement. He is not throwing his head out and dragging his arm as much. This is good but he is slowing down to ball release. He needs to keep his same speed that he has in the first video above with these improved mecahanics.
