OfflineBrent,
I notice you were advocating having the elbow in a position above the shoulder in the
pitching motion. You mentioned this in the video in the beginner series when talking about
the importance of pronation. I understand pronation and it's importance, but I was under the
understanding that anytime the elbow is above the shoulder there is a degree of impingement. This
is a major concern in FFS (inverted W) where the impingement can be hazardous. Could you
elaborate on this.
I notice in video of pro pitchers (from the catchers perspective) that is appears the elbow is above
the shoulder, but that is generally an illusion due to the fact the shoulders are tilted……

I understand your point here and the problem is this part of the delivery is a very delicate part when it comes protecting the shoulder and elbow. I do recommend the elbow being just above the shoulder when the shoulders are open towards the target. I coach the elbow to actually be below the shoulders during hip and shoulder separation. When I say just above, I mean in line or just above the shoulders like in the pic here of Chapman in this position. You are correct though, I do not want it to be too high because this can lead to an impingement but also understand that if the elbow falls under the shoulder when the shoulders open towards the target then we put the UCL in a very vulnerable position. This position can lead to UCL tears or growth plate issues with youth pitchers.
I am glad you brought this up, it is a very important topic.

OfflineWhat about the body tilt?
If the shoulders are on the same plane, then the elbow should be at that line or below.
Looking at that angle its hard to see. But the way his body is tilted it gives us a bad assumption of where that elbow is, inline with the plane of the shoulders

Offlineproper arm action to the safe zone is def a requirement for arm health… i was watching olympic gold medalist jan zelzany (forgive) and he was a 92+ pitcher with a strange but very powerful movement.. he is on youtube throwing to the braves in 1995 if anyone wants a link ill get it
but the main point is having the arm in the safe zone before chest thrust.. this is a very powerful movement that will naturally lead the arm to IR/pronation
thanks mr brent!
