Brent,

I was reading your article on Tim Collins' transformation into a big league pitcher. I also read the article from men's health. I saw that Tim's strength and conditioning coach was Eric Cressey. Anyways, I went onto Eric Cressey's website and read through some of it. One thing I found that surprised me is that he does not like back squats for pitchers because of the positioning of the shoulder. I always thought back squats were good for pitchers. I don't have your program so I don't know if those are a part of your program. What do you think?

Here's the link…http://ericcressey.com/back-sq…..d-throwers

Brandon, Cressey also doesn't do any of the Olympic lifts which I am a big advocate of. I have based most of my programs more on trial and error than theory. Cressey is talking a lot of theory in his explanation of why he does not allow pitchers to squat. I believe in the back squat as much as I believe in the Olympic lifts. I have been back squatting and performing the Olympic lifts all of my life and I have never had an issue and neither have any of my pitchers and the pitchers I have trained around through my career. I like Cressey's work, I just feel he is a little over protective for me. I take a more aggressive approach in the gym because all bodies are different and what is an issue for one guy, isn't an issue for another. I hate putting ever athlete into the same mold and you will never know if an exercise is good or bad for you, if you do not try it.

I avoided bench press most of my pitching career because I heard it was bad for your arm and I tore my rotator cuff. After my rotator cuff tear, I never stopped doing bench press and I never had an injury again.

Brent,

Thanks for clearing that up. I have done back squats since I started lifting years ago and I never thought of it as something that could potentially put the shoulder at risk. And beings that I am 4 months post shoulder surgery myself, I wasn't sure if that was something to avoid.

If your rotator cuff and shoulder is apart of your strength and conditioning program it is a none issue. Squat away but always focus on good technique everytime you lift.

The videos you can access as part of the 3X program do a very good job describing proper technique for the squat and other lifts.  Another great resource is the elitefts channel on you tube.  They have a great 6-part series called "so you think you can squat".  Just about any technique question you could have is addressed there.  Also great videos on bench press, deadlift and other accessory exercises for powerlifting.  Unfortunately, not much about olympic lifts, but those are in 3X videos.

Thanks for the resource jroback! Here is the Olympic Lifting Coach Gayle Hatch instructing the lifts. He is the best and a legend!

The boy in the video is the Olympian Matt Bruce who in this video was 20 years old and could clean and jerk over his head 415lbs. Match Bruce is one of the reasons I believe the Olympic Lifts are far superior to any other lift because Matt Bruce can lift this kind of weight and is not bulky at all. He can kick his leg over his head and his vertical is 46 inches. This is why pitchers must train this way.

Thanks guys. That is good stuff. How do you develop the mobility to get into the deep squat?
