OfflineLast year, we snuck into the gym and threw twice a week. Catch one night (short, long toss I guess) and catch and pitch the other. He never once complained of his arm hurting this year either. Through out the summer I have read all the pitching recommendations from ASMI and have followed them very easily. With the inning's being the restriction he never went past the suggested pitch count.
I am seeing from a lot of articles, that he should have about 4 months of "non" throwing. Should I cut the gym routine?
Heres what he threw this year. Hes well under the 1000 pitch recommended for his age
Innings pitched………….33 2/3K's………………………….67BB's………………………..25 one intentionalHits…………………………25ER…………………………..10Total pitches……………..612ERA (calculated for 3 inning max) .8886 of the runs were scored by the number one team in our division who outscored their opponents 227-50(16 games). In three games against my son (9inn) they only scored 6. We were also the only team to beat them in our division.
He had 3 no hitters when he pitched at max allowance (3). The walks were my fault because I was head coach this year and we didnt get his normal bull pen work outs.

OfflineJason, I wouldn't call this an off-season throwing program. An off-season throwing program does not include season play. I am bringing this up because it makes an important point. We need to understand that when a pitcher is pitching in games during a season, it is always considered in-season.
The reason ASMI and others are advising that a pitcher take 4 months off from throwing is because this 4 months equals an off-season. We are advising that all pitchers should take an off-season from pitching every year.I believe you can still throw in an off-season just not in a game situation. The 3X Pitching Velocity program is an off-season program that uses a low volume of throws, with mainly medicine ball throws, to work on the 3X mechanics along with a strength and conditioning program. This is so the pitcher can take an off-season, to not only rest and recover but rebuild and increase velocity for the new season!

OfflineI assumed it meant throwing hard! We will be doing a lot more in the gym anyway (conditioning) but still do our throwing then!

OfflineI would say off season is mostimportant to pitchers. He shouldn't be pitching in all 3 seasons, you have mentioned or at least limit to less throwing if he is going to throw (pitch) in all of them. With kids choosing to participate in only one sport they put more stress on the muscles and joints involved with the sport and don't have the needed rest time. If hes a regular position player, I wouldn't worry too much on the four month, suggested off season…..

OfflineUp here in MN, I cant even imagine joing the spring league (6 or 10 games). We dont even get enough time to get ready for the summer season… ITS TOOO COLD…. stay south!! But being able to play ball 12 months a year, keep it safe.. As much as I hate winter, it does give my son the proper rest needed for pitching…

OfflineWe'll be seeing you after Thanksgiving.
My son is Pitcher Only and b/c we moved south from RI – year round baseball is new – but he has been a feature pitcher in each season. Although this Fall he is going just 1 to 5 innings per outing.
However kudos to the 3X – he bought program just about 6 weeks ago – and hit 90 MPH for first time at the Prospectwire tournament in Auburndale on Oct 30th.
