OfflineI am strict with my guys when it comes to an off-season and I say no games. The problem is you throw a complete game or even a few competitive innings and your small muscle groups need at least 2-3 days to recover which will take you away from your off-season lifting program. You need to set your goals for the off-season and just focus on accomplishing them.

Brent: Evan is now in week 13 of the program. He threw 30 pitches from the stretch off the mound on Sunday, and then threw a simulated bullpen of 45 pitches yesterday. He was throwing pretty hard (putting a lot of effort in), especially yesterday. I'm wondering two things: (1) in your experience is throwing with high effort as part of the program different than throwing competitive innings in a game? And (2) for the bullpen, he's supposed to give Max Effort for the last 10 pitches — what should he be trying to do (what should his focus be) for the first 35 pitches? Thanks, JR

OfflineYes, there is a big difference between throwing a pen and throwing in a game when it comes to wear and tear. In a game you more than likely are playing on adrenaline. This usually isn't the case with a bull pen. When on adrenaline you not only are firing your muscles faster but you are not feeling as much discomfort from fatigue. This is why you can throw a 45 pitch bull pen and feel great the next day but throw a 45 pitch inning in a game and you can't even throw the ball the next day because you are so sore.
Max effort in your pens means you are pushing your body to its top speed. The other pitches you are around 60-85% effort which means you are just focusing on timing and mobility but not max speed.
