OfflineEvan's summer travel-ball coach, as well some of the coaches at colleges he's interested in, asked players to put together a recruiting video. Does anybody have suggestions about how to put together a video for a high school pitcher: what kind of videos and stats should be in it, include both school and travel-ball footage, include bull pen sessions, various angles, etc? What are the key things that a college coach would want to seen in pitching videos? Thanks, JR

OfflineI would shoot a side view and then a behind view with a radar gun showing speed and also different pitches. I would also have a profile screen to show height, weight, age, maybe 60 speed, vertical jump. If I was a college coach I would also want to know back squat max, power clean max and bench press max.

OfflineI'll let someone else comment on production issues – what format, where to post it, etc. I'm pretty low tech. But, what a coach would want to see of a pitcher is game footage from at least the 3b angle and the behind-the-catcher angle. The view from behind is important too, but sometimes that's kind of hard to do at a game from center field. So, get that angle from a bullpen if you need to. If he throws hard for his age, put a gun on him in that shot. If he doesn't – don't. Fill the picture up with the pitcher. They don't need to see the whole field or any other players (except the catcher in the CF and C shots). Make it easy for them to look at him. No more than a couple of pitches from each view.
Coaches don't pay much attention to stats, but include the simple ones if he's had a good year. Whatever you do, don't include any comments from you (his dad). Coaches laugh at those.
Include information on how to contact him and his coaches. No one is going to recruit him from a video, but it might get them to take a look at him in person or contact his coaches. So, keep it simple.
I think baseball is a very poorly recruited sport – as opposed to football, for instance. Everybody knows who the studs are, but once you get past that level it's a crapshoot. You have to be in the right place at the right time. So, once you reach the age where they're paying attention (pre-junior year), you should just play as much as you can in places where they can see you. And his coaches are a very important source of contacts.

OfflineHaha, I agree, Brent gives info in fewer words. I guess that a lot of people don't like reading a huge amount of text. Which means that straight to the point and easy to understand, compared to other sites they just babble on and on and I don't get what they are trying to say. But yes, sometimes breaking it down can sometimes help someone understand the concept better.

OfflineIm a member of NCSA Recruiting management. They have a list of what they want to see by position.
They have too many suggestions for me to post. I will send you info in an email if you like.

Pitchers should log:
- Begin recording these pitches AFTER a complete warm-up.
- We must be able to see the catcher catch the ball at all times.
- With RHP camera angle set up 3 ft. to the right and 5 ft. behind the mound to be able to see ball movement. LHP should be to the left.
- Log 10 varied pitches, with fastball at least 5 of them
- Log 10 varied pitches out of the stretch, with fastball at least 5 of them
- With camera angle set up 3 ft. behind the right-handed batters box for RHP and 3 ft. behind the left-handed batters box for LHP
- Log 10 varied pitches, with fastball at least 5 of them
- Log 10 varied pitches out of the stretch, with fastball at least 5 of them.
