When I visit this site I am often struck by the immense amount of information, studies, and articles related to pitching and pitching instruction. Yet when I actually talk to coaches at various levels, I am actaully stunned by how little they actually understand about pitching mechanics and training. I don't expect them to understand 3X or the force vector, unless they have visited this site.

But shouldnt they understand concepts like:

hip/shoulder separation

keeping the front leg closed

The importance of the drive leg

Whenever I discuss these issues, its like a fog comes over them and their eyes glaze over. Can anyone tell me what the heck these coaches (at $75 an hour) actually do and what their general philosophy is?

Scott,

Your post here is the reason I put this site together. You are correct, most "Pitching Coaches" have no idea what we are discovering and developing here at TopVelocity.net. They are so lost in conventional wisdom that it is a joke when you talk to these coaches, like your experience above. I am just excited when I here the community here running into these awkward situations. I know the more popular this site grows the more and more these so called "Pitching Coaches" will be forced to do some homework and then hopefully the pitching world will evolve but until then, we all are going to run into these awkward situations time and time again.

What you are learning here is that your area needs more qualified "Pitching Instructors" and that you could provide this need by coaching yourself the 3X Pitching approach to young pitchers in your area. These young pitchers would benefit more from giving you the $75 instead of these conventional pitching coaches who think they desire that money because they played some college or pro ball.

Brent,

When I ask them what their "instruction" consists of, they'll mention:

Medicine balls for core work

Band work for shoulders and arms

Long toss

Throwing sessions

Are these coaches teaching "throwing" or mechanics. No mention of video taping.

You should start coaching. All you need to do is get them on the 3X Pitching Velocity program and send all of the video to me for analysis. You would do a lot better than these fools!

Haha, I agree. Most Coaches follow what MLB coaches do, which are all those things you mentioned. But because MLB has all the top players they don't need to be developing their pitchers to have more velocity, which is why they only do maintenance work. They think it's like top of the class, but no those guys don't know a thing when it comes to pitching.

Guys,

What is really killing me is the fact that what they are teaching is leading to a ton of young pitchers having major injuries to their throwing arms at a young age.

The amount of surgeries that is being performed on pitchers under the age of 16 is crazy.  I truly believe the only way we are going to stop this is if we (ALL) train this generation in what 3X really does for not just velocity but overall arm health.

Brent being totally honest.  The arm health component of your program is what lead me into digging deeper into your program and eventually buy it.

Scott go out and start coaching it.

The couple of H.S. pitchers that I have working 3X love it.  I Can't wait to share it and teach to everyone I can.

Darrell,

Injury prevention is a major benefit of the program. You know I developed this program for myself when I was overcoming a rotator cuff tear. I had to not only develop a program that got my velocity back and better but it had to prevent my arm from tearing up again which it did.

I really appreciate you bringing up the point that this program is great for arm health because I feel very few are aware of this!

The "pitching coaches" around here have 2 things in common:

1- they run AAU teams that parents want to get their kids on.

2- they pitched some college ball.
