Brent:  As I was catching up on your video analyses this weekend, I kept noticing the impressive external rotation that Bauer, Chapman, etc were achieving.  The side views show their upper arms vertical and their elbows behind their ears.  Can you comment on how far their elbows are from their ears when viewed from the back (2nd base)?  Evan can get into the position when viewed from the side, but his elbow is probably 12 inches or more from his ear when viewed from the back.  I'm wondering whether he should start stretching his shoulders after workouts in order to be able to get closer to the ear.  Or is this another way of looking at the "arm slot" debate where some pitchers throw from a 3/4 slot (elbows farther from ear), while others through more directly overhand (elbow closer to ear)?  Thanks,   John

Pitching Arm SlotActually the elbow is always the same distance from the ear with most hard throwing pitchers. The arm slot is based on the shoulder alignment. Notice the pic here of Chapman from the front. His shoulders are tilted to the glove side which puts him in a position to go either Over the Top or 3/4 Slot. You can see that he gets to a 3/4 Slot at realease. Sidearm or submarine pitchers have to tilt the shoulders towards the throwing arm side so they can hit a sidearm or submarine slot without dropping the elbow which can lead to arm problems.

When it comes to arm health you always want your elbow either in line with your shoulders or just above your shoulders during external rotation. When the elbow drops below the shoulders at this point of external rotation, you put too much torque on the elbow. This will lead to elbow problems.

Thanks Brent.  I went back and pulled up a couple of pictures from last year (pre-3X).  Based on your response, I would say that elbow to shoulder alignment was fine then, and probably still fine now since we haven't specifically done anything to change it.  JR

Yes, just continue through 3X and focus on converting more stride power into hip to shoulder separation. This will increase the speed of the shoulder rotation which will also result in more external rotation of the throwing arm.
