OfflineHere is a graph of his average velocities by year:
http://www.fangraphs.com/pitch…..8;pitch=FA
He started these mechanical changes in 2010. '09 and '10's average velocity seem pretty consistent but his variance seems to be smaller in '10. In 2011, however, his velocity seems to have gone down.

OfflineNice find! I feel that his loss in velocity could be related to too much rotation at leg lift because this is causing him to open his lift leg to early during his stride phase. This is why he is not achieving 3x before front foot strike in this video. He was doing this when he was coming up into the big leagues and touching three digits.

OfflineGreat stuff, Lefty. It looks like he is completely stalled over the rubber until well after he reaches max leg lift. He doesn't really start generating momentum until after he finishes his leg lift and then straightens back up on line to the target. When I see young pitchers stall like that it affects their command as well as their velocity because they have to put so much effort into the end of the delivery because they wasted the opportunity to generate momentum early in the delivery. This is an example of major league guys having the talent to overcome things you wouldn't want a young pitcher to emulate. But, it affects them too – as Lefty's research and Brent's observation of his lack of extension shows. Nice job, guys.
