3X Pitching Superior to Extreme Long Toss

The argument behind extreme long toss is that the pitcher will learn how to take the velocity of a 300 foot throw and transfer it into a 60 foot throw. This is what I learned from watching an interview with Alan Jaeger who uses extreme long toss with yoga to develop pitchers.
If you have been following this site then you know that I am totally against this approach to pitching. Here is a quick summary of why I am against this type of training. The American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) proves in their latest case study here that this type of long toss creates elbow varus torque in the arm and uses different mechanics than those used on the mound. In defence, Alan Jaeger says that the athletics of the 300 foot throw when restricted to 60 feet, through his “Pull Down” phase, forces the pitcher to be more open and explosive. Read more
Scientific Proof that 3X will Increase Velocity and Prevent Injury

Most gimmicks on the internet, that claim to increase velocity or just enhance pitching performance, mainly focus on the upper kinetic chain, like the arm. This would include gimmicks like the latest “Speed Chains” and the old school “Weighted balls.” They all use the word “Arm Strength” when selling their product. This is also the case with programs that use extreme long tossing as the means to building the power pitcher, which well respected institutes like ASMI have proven this to be an inadvisable practice. I spent my career weeding through this clutter trying to find the answers to velocity after my arm surgery and my intuition always told me I was wasting my time with these all arm approaches to pitching velocity. Pulling Down is Slowing Down

Alan Jaeger’s Long Toss program uses what he calls the “Pull down phase.” This is because after throwing the ball 300 feet in his “Air it out” program he wants you to pull down your delivery so you do not continue to launch the ball high as you move closer to 60 feet. The problem is this goes against the science of velocity.
Pitching velocity is the product of momentum and torque. You can read countless articles on this site about Momentum and Torque. Pulling the ball down during release prevents early internal rotation which is a key component to velocity as stated in the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) case study called Comparison of High Velocity and Low Velocity Pitch Deliveries. The Proper Research on Why Extreme Long Toss is Bad for Your Arm!

Alan Jaeger is upset that TopVelocity.net has not done the proper research on long tossing. He said in an email to me, “If you are going to be in the public domain, I would urge you to do the proper research.” I am not sure if you have visited his website but I do not see him practicing what he preaches. There is a lot more research posted on TopVelocity.net than www.jaegersports.com but I will still give him what he has requested in his email, “Proper Research.” Read more
