In the game of baseball, all skills require small muscle groups moving big muscle groups. This means you must use a strength and conditioning program that not only develops you to become Bigger, Stronger, Faster but it builds joint integrity as well. Most training programs neglect either the effectiveness of training the big muscle groups and only isolates the small muscle groups and vice verse. A training program that is built around both muscle groups is far superior to the others.

It is important to also make sure that you are educated in the mechanics of the lifts. The Olympic lifts are some of the most powerful lifts in the weight room to training the athlete to grow Bigger, Stronger, Faster. These lifts though are as intricate as learn proper throwing or hitting mechanics. You must spend as much time learning these lifting mechanics as you spend learning your throwing or hitting mechanics. This would mean you need a program that comes with a trainer who is educated enough to coach these lifts or a training video that will replace the trainer. You will find some great training videos below along with the baseball training programs.

What to look for in a effective baseball workout?

Olympic Lifts

Plyometric training

Medicine Ball training

Joint Integrity training

Anaerobic training

8 Week Cycle which includes a: base week, volumn week, recovery week and performance week.

Repititions based on one rep max percentages per lift.

Days off per week for full recovery.

If you like what you are reading here then I highly recommend that you purchase the Baseball Training Manual below. It is made up of the popular Fusion System. This is a Bigger, Stronger, Faster approach to training the baseball player. This program is ideal for all position players including pitchers. If you are a pitcher, I highly recommend that you purchase the 3X Pitching Velocity Program because this includes everything you will need to implement the benefits of this superior training program into your pitching mechanics.

If you would like a taste of what this type of training is all about before you purchase the Baseball Workout then check out the Beginner Baseball Workout.

If you are ready for the real deal then step up to the plate and take your game to a whole new level with the Baseball Training Manual.

I was lucky enough to have a 40 minute interview with someone who’s story inspired my ability to overcome major rotator cuff surgery to throw 94 MPH and play professional ball. His story not only inspired me but more than likely hundreds of thousands of athletes to this date. Not only is his story inspiring it is amazing. It makes my story look like a B movie!

His name is Jim Morris and he is soon to be legendary. I have to say it was such an honor to speak with him. If you do not know who he is then you may know him better by the movie that was based on the true story of his own life called “The Rookie!” If you have not seen this movie then I suggest you stop reading this article now and go watch it.

In the interview above, Mr. Jim Morris will give you the secrets to his success. You will learn that, like I, we both used a core and leg based strength and conditioning program similar to the Fusion System in the Ace Pitcher Handbook. I was so excited to hear him talk about the importance of a heavy leg and core based weight training program and how it was a big part of his ability to pitch again because it is what I feel allowed me to make a comeback in my career. I have heard many “Old School” pitching coaches and others say that weight training is not important to building an explosive pitcher. In this interview you will hear from someone who did what very few people have done and in one case, no one has done. He threw 99MPH and was the oldest player at 35 years old to make his Major League debut. Mr. Morris continues on through the interview to inform us that the keys to his success where not only a good strength and conditioning program but building the complete pitcher or person involves everything from diet, to a healthy mental approach and most importantly your Faith.

I started off this interview a little nervous but by the end I was once again inspired by a very wise and passionate man. I beg everyone and anyone to listen to this interview and hire him to speak at your local community function if you can. I believe and his accomplishments prove it, that Jim “The Rookie” Morris discovered the secrets to throwing hard and becoming an elite pitcher with all of the odds stacked against him. This is a must see video and I hope you enjoy my interview with him because I really did!

It better be important because if you look up another word for speed in a Thesaurus you will get Velocity. Now let me ask that question again with the other word.

How important is Velocity to you on the mound?

Now, I hope I got your attention. If you are confused then I suggest you read my article called The Phenomenon of Speed Mechanics!

Seriously, read the article!

Welcome back! Now that you understand the importance of body speed in pitching I can introduce to you Alex Maroko. He is a speed and agility trainer and he is one of the best. He has a program called the “Truth About Quickness” and instead of stealing it from him and putting it into the Ace Pitcher Handbook, I decided to just tell you about his program and then let you decide. His program focuses on pure speed for the athlete. He is a speed freak and he knows his stuff. His program will not only teach you how to model more fast twitch muscle fiber but also how to maintain it during season. His program is full of valuable information on building the elite explosive athlete.

Alex’s program fits perfectly with the Ace Pitcher Handbook and the Fusion system. I recommend that you substitute his program for the anaerobic training portion of the Fusion System. It will take the anaerobic training portion of the Fusion System to a whole new level. This will help you move a lot faster towards your velocity goals. To get a better understanding of his program here is a video library of some of his speed drills.

If you feel the same way I do about Alex’s program and you want to jump on the incredible offer he is selling this program for I suggest you select this link that he sent me to his best offer. I do not know how long this link will put out his lowest offer so I would act now! Best of luck!

This isn’t a quick fix program or a take this pill and pump 90+ infomercial. This is a legit program developed by legit trainers and professionals in the game of baseball.

Included with the 3X Pitching approach is the Fusion System. This is one of the top Bigger, Stronger, Faster Strength and Conditioning programs out on the web today. It was developed by USA Weightlifting certified Sports Performance Coach Brent Pourciau along with the 3X Velocity mechanics, drills and more. Brent Pourciau overcame career ending rotator cuff surgery to pitch professionally and reach his velocity goal of 94 MPH after doctors told him he would never pitch again. That is right, this program is the real thing!!! The only question is are you the real thing and are you ready to take it to a whole new level of performance? Nolan Ryan once said,

“Pitching in the big leagues is a dream. Preparing to pitch in the big leagues is a nightmare!”

THIS PROGRAM ISN’T FOR SLACKERS. IT ISN’T FOR KIDS. IT IS FOR GROWN MEN. THE ACE PITCHER HANDBOOK WITH THE 3X APPROACH IS EXTREMELY INTENSE BECAUSE IT PRODUCES RESULTS.

The main purpose of a Drill, is to practice a component of the delivery that will help to correct a mechanical flaw. I also believe it is important to add resistance to a drill to help imprint the new muscle memory.

The drill below should be performed 2 – 3 days a week, for at least 3 – 4 months. The drill should also be performed after completing the “Flexibility Training” portion of the Fusion System which can be found in the Ace Pitcher Handbook. You can also find more drills in the handbook. Try to push each drill to muscle fatigue, if possible. What you will need to perform the drill is your glove and some resistance tubing. All of these products can be purchased at the Velocity Store.

The purpose of this drill is to enforce the “Separation” position. To perform this drill you need a resistance band or tubing. Connect the band to a fence or have someone hold the band behind you.

Instructions:

Pic #1:

Start in the “Separation” position, with the band held with your throwing arm. Arm some what relaxed and close to your body. Your glove hand is turned over and you are looking down your elbow. Both your feet are facing the target which opens your hips. Finally make sure your back shoulder is all the way behind you to help build more torque in your core.

Pic #2:

When ready, turn over and tuck your glove hand and then push your belly and chest to your front knee, allowing the band to pull your arm back behind your head. Make sure your hips are positioned under your chest. You are now in the “Pull.” Perform pic #2 from the previous drill before continuing down to pic #3 on this drill.

Pic #3:

Continue to stabilize your landing leg, knee, hip and chest while driving your chest out over your front foot. Once your chest has hit the wall, finish the pitch with your fingers on top of the ball and your hand 6 inches in front of foot. Make sure your elbow pulls through just above your throwing shoulder.

* Remember after creating torque in your core and your shoulders have opened to the target, velocity is based on how fast you can transfer your weight to your release point. So perform this drill with explosive power.

The drill below should be performed 2 – 3 days a week, for at least 3 – 4 months. The drill should also be performed after completing the “Flexibility Training” portion of the Fusion System which can be found in the Ace Pitcher Handbook. All of these products can be purchased at the Velocity Store.

The purpose of this drill is to enforce the “Chest Thrust” position. To perform this drill you need a resistance band or tubing. Connect the band to a fence or have someone hold the band behind you.

Instructions:

Pic #1:

Start in the “Chest Thrust” position, with the band held with your throwing arm resting behind you. Your chest is up and your hips are under your chest. Both of your feet facing the target in a full stride.

Pic #2:

When ready, drive your chest out over your front foot while continuing to relax your arm. All of your weight is now on your front foot.

Pic #3:

Once your chest hits the wall, extend your elbow above your head and out in front of your body, finishing the pitch. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR FRONT KNEE TO MOVE.

* The goal of this drill is to shift your weight as fast as possible while relaxing your arm. Velocity is based on how fast you can shift your weight and then transfer that into the ball. This is why it is important to stabilize the front leg and not let it bend.

Sorry to bust your bubble but it takes a lot of hard and smart work to develop it. If you are looking to gain 4-5 mph on your fastball then you must work to improve in all facets of pitching. These facets include:

Efficient and effective pitching mechanics.

An explosive fast twitch focused total body.

Proper nutrition and supplementation.

A healthy mental approach and faith in something greater than yourself.

I understand this news can be overwhelming and a buzz killer but if gaining velocity was easy and could come in a pill form then everyone would be doing it and 90 plus mph would become average. If you want to be extraordinary then you must live to be extraordinary. Listed below are some links to get you on the right track to developing velocity, that you are so determined to obtain, in such a short period of time.

The main purpose of a Drill, is to practice a component of the delivery that will help to correct a mechanical flaw. I also believe it is important to add resistance to a drill to help imprint the new muscle memory.

The drill below should be performed 2 – 3 days a week, for at least 3 – 4 months. The drill should also be performed after completing the “Flexibility Training” portion of the Fusion System which can be found in the Ace Pitcher Handbook included in the 3X Pitching Velocity Program. You will also find a ton more drills in the 3X programs. Try to push each drill to muscle fatigue, if possible. What you will need to perform the drill is your glove, a hiking or weight belt and some resistance bands or tubing. All of these products can be purchased here at the Equipment Store.

The purpose of this drill is to learn how to develop more momentum in your lower half through triple extension (3X) and use that momentum to build torque in the core. Connect the bands to the belt and then to a fence or preferably have someone hold the bands.

Instructions:

Pic #1:

Start in the stretch position, with the bands held tight behind you. Lift your leg and lead with your front hip towards the target as you drive the belt forward, as if you are pitching the ball. Remember to keep your head over your belt buckle as your hips move forward and do not let your back knee bend forward over your back toes. Now, move into the “Load” position (select “Load” to view). This will help you build more momentum.

Pic #2:

This picture does not show a good stride because of the frame restrictions. Triple extend your drive leg before your front leg lands into a full stride with at least a 6 inch drag line in your back foot. The goal is to generate as much power as possible, without letting your shoulders commit to the target. Drive your back hip through hard, by kicking your drive leg ankle through before your front foot lands. You should work hard to get your back hip close to your front knee and your back shoulder over your back leg when finished, like in the picture.

Pic #3:

If you are having a hard time holding your shoulders back, as you drive your hips forward, then use a broom stick to keep your shoulder back and loaded.

The goal of the drill is to train momentum by building as much power as possible through triple extension in your back leg. DO NOT let your shoulders travel with your hips. This will prevent you from using your hard earned power to build torque in your core, like in picture #2. You want to generate as much hip to shoulder separation as possible.

Most pitchers do not have any understanding of optimal core torque. If this is the case, when you hit Pic #2 it may feel awkward. Just make sure you are in the same position as the picture. This component is called “Triple extension and separation.” This drill should fatigue your hips and legs. Work Hard!

Purchase the 3X Pitching Velocity Program to add 5-10mph to your fastball with a ton more excellent drills like the Sled Drill.

There are NOT many pitching workouts out there made for the athlete. This is why most of them or ineffective. The reason they are ineffective is because they do not train athletic performance. I am not a certified trainer but I have spent the past 15 years learning from some of the best in the business. I have also tried just about every workout available. The only time I every noticed an effect on my velocity was after training with the Olympic lifts.

Dick Mill’s says that science today has proven weight training does not increase your throwing velocity. I have yet to find any scientific information on this theory. I would like to ask Dick Mill’s, “Why, when I was a junior in college and training with the Olympic Lifts, after six months my velocity went from 82 to 90 MPH?” During that summer I played on a travel team, I would complete an intense workout and then rush to pitch a full game immediately after the workout. I may not recommend this to other pitchers but it sure did work for me. I then spent the last five or more years trying to figure out why this worked. This is when I wrote the article “Olympic Lifting Increases Pitching Velocity” and also this is when I coined the term “Triple Extension.”

The reason for my velocity improvements did come from the Olympic lifts. This is because, if these lifts are performed correctly, they will max out your core strength potential and promote fast twitch muscle fiber growth. There is no better way to train your core and fast twitch fiber, than with these lifts. If I go a week without performing these lifts, after my first day back I can feel the weakness first in my core. I even have serious soreness in my core the next few days. I also immediately feel more powerful on the field after the soreness goes away. I feel it when I sprint and throw. Just like when you do a lot of squats and your vertical leap goes up.

The biggest miss conception about these lifts are that they will turn you into Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is a fairy tale. The Olympic lifts build defined athletes. Just look at Matt Bruce here, a current Olympian. He is about 5’7 and 170 pounds. He can Power Clean and Jerk over 400 pounds and he looks like a boy in person.

If you are a pitcher and you are looking for these type of velocity improvements, then you need to drop everything you are doing and learn these lifts. You need to start a program like my “Fusion System.” This workout is the main part of the Ace Pitcher Handbook and was developed by my trainer Chad Engelhardt. It is called the “Fusion System” because it isn’t only about these lifts I have described. It is also about building joint integrity to handle more stress from the improved velocity and the sprint work to really define those fast twitch fibers.

So, if you currently have a program that involves you sitting in an air conditioned health club, on a cushioned seat, performing a chest press, then you better ask yourself, “How the Hell is this making me a better athlete?” It isn’t! Athletes are not made in health clubs. They are made in hot sweaty gyms and on dirty ball fields. Remember this, if you want to play with the “Big Guns,” you better train like one!
