<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>In three published studies, Dr. Glenn Fleisig and Dr. James R. Andrews from ASMI worked with other researchers in studying many of the parameters that affect baseball pitch velocity. Two of the studies looked between different pitchers and one study looked at variations within each pitcher. Motions during delivery were analyzed using a high speed (200 frames per second) infrared three-dimensional motion analysis system.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>In the study by Matsuo and others, pitchers with higher ball velocity were compared with pitchers with lower ball velocity. Four significant differences were found between these two groups. Compared to the low ball velocity group, the higher ball velocity pitchers demonstrated less lead knee flexion velocity after front foot contact and greater lead knee extension velocity at the time of ball release. Extending the lead knee in this manner may provide stabilization allowing better energy transfer from the trunk to the throwing arm, and could be a critical factor in pitch velocity. Maximum shoulder external rotation and forward trunk tilt at ball release were also greater in the higher velocity group. Greater shoulder external rotation causes a stretch of the internal rotators allowing energy to be stored in these muscles, and creating greater internal rotation during the arm acceleration phase.</p>
<p>Two variations were found in the timing of events. Maximum elbow extension angular velocity and maximum shoulder internal rotation angular velocity occurred earlier in the motion of higher velocity pitchers. The maximum shoulder internal rotation angular velocity also occurred closer to the moment of ball release in the higher velocity pitchers. This optimal timing may aid in generating higher velocity pitches.</p>
<p>Another finding of interest is that early in the pitching motion, the two groups were dissimilar in the timing of their movements, while their later movement timing was much more similar. This implies that early trunk and torso movements are more varied among pitchers than late arm movements.</p>
<p>In the first study by Stodden and others (2001), pelvis and upper torso variables were studied in 19 elite baseball pitchers. The study found that when the arm was completely cocked back (that is, maximum shoulder external rotation, or &#8220;MER&#8221;), more &#8220;open&#8221; pelvis and upper torso orientation correlated with increased ball velocity. More open pelvis angle at the time of ball release (REL) also correlated with increased pitch velocity increased. Additionally, pelvis angular velocity from front foot contact to MER, and upper torso angular velocity from MER to REL increased with increased velocity.</p>
<p>The data indicate that a pitcher who is able to position himself properly, and rotate his pelvis and upper torso more quickly is able to generate greater momentum. Theoretically, this increase in momentum leads to greater velocity of the throwing arm and thus greater pitch velocity.</p>
<p>The most recent study by Stodden and others (2005) showed that for a given pitcher, increased elbow flexion torque, shoulder proximal force and elbow proximal force produced greater ball velocity. In addition, the maximum shoulder horizontal adduction occurred later and maximum shoulder internal rotation occurred earlier at greater ball velocities. Higher ball velocity also resulted in decreased shoulder horizontal adduction at foot contact, decreased shoulder abduction during acceleration, and increased trunk tilt forward at ball release.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>A pitcher with increased shoulder external rotation, faster pelvis and upper trunk rotation, and greater front knee stabilization and extension will throw with greater ball velocity.  Improved timing to maximize arm velocity closer to the time of ball release will also help ball velocity.  Increased torque and force produced at both the shoulder and elbow will also lead to greater ball velocity.</p>

The arm does not generate the velocity. It only guides the pitch. Therefore the arm must follow the body and does not come into play until the body has done its job. <span id="more-1453"></span></p>
<p>I have been in many arguments about this issue. I have listened to coaches tell their pitchers that if they want to throw harder they need to speed up their arms. My question is how will speeding up your arm increase your velocity? This doesn&#8217;t make much sense because if you arm leads your body, it must leave the body behind. If you leave the body behind then it is up to the small muscles of the arm to take the entire workload of generating 90+ mph.</p>
<p>I think to prove my answer to the question above we must once again look at the little pitchers in the game. This is because these guys must work a lot harder to generate 90+ mph. I go once again to my favorite little man Tim Lincecum; 5&#8217;7 165 lbs. Notice the picture here of him at front foot strike. Now, where is his arm? It is hiding behind his body. YES, all you coaches out there who are coaching your pitchers to speed up there arms, it is behind his body. This means his body is driving the pitch. This means his body is generating the velocity. This means the arm is along for the ride.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1455" style="float:left;margin:5px;" title="vambh" src="http://up.topvelocity.net/uploads/2009/04/vambh.jpg" alt="vambh" width="144" height="164" />The coaches who will argue my point here are the coaches who use giant pitchers like Randy Johnson as their example of pitchers who have a lot of arm action. This is true but these pitchers have more leverage on the ball than the average man. If you are 6&#8217;8 like Randy Johnson then congratulations you are in a small percentage of baseball players but if you are 6&#8217;2 and under take it easy on your arm and learn to work your body as a single unit in your delivery. When you work on generating velocity, work on pulling it from your legs and core and not your arm.</p>
<p>I recommend using medicine balls as often as you can. I have many throwing drills with these balls that force the pitcher to use every muscle they have to make the throw. This is how we must pitch if we want to throw and withstand 90+ mph.</p>

The windup represents the old style of pitching from back in the day when the pitchers would use the windup to get their arms moving faster like in the video clip here of Dizzy Dean. Now that we have learned that doing this is destructive to pitching velocity, the windup has become just an extra step to throwing in the stretch.<span id="more-1386"></span></p>
<h2>The Benefits of the Windup</h2>
<ol>
<li>This means no one is on base, so you potentially have more time to build momentum through your stride but you can also do this in the stretch.</li>
<li>This also means, you have more time once you start your delivery, to focus up on the target. Not to say you can&#8217;t do this in the stretch either.</li>
<li>It is a more intimidating position to face the batter which will give the pitcher more confidence.</li>
</ol>
<h2>The Benefits of the Stretch</h2>
<ol>
<li>You will throw your most important pitches here.</li>
<li>You have a more simple delivery mechanically.</li>
<li>You can get a good foot position on the rubber.</li>
</ol>
<p>I believe that the deciding factor, of a pitcher who would either like to use the stretch or the windup without runners on base, is the foot position issue. You can get your foot in a more comfortable and athletic position when in the stretch. This would really benefit pitchers who are playing on bad fields. You know that mound that has a crater in front of the rubber that annoys the hell out of you! Here is a <a href="http://topvelocity.net/pitching-velocity-quick-tip6/">velocity quick tip</a> that covers how to effectively position your foot on the rubber.</p>
<p>Pitchers that prefer the windup over the stretch, when acceptable, usually say the reason is because they feel more comfortable in the windup. If this is the case for you or your pitchers then this is fine. The only problem is if there is a significant difference between the pitchers delivery when in the windup as opposed to the stretch.  There should be no difference once the lift leg hip begins towards the target. Notice the video of John Smoltz below. His two deliveries are seamless between his windup and stretch.</p>
<p>I recommend pitching in the stretch more often because you will throw your most important pitches there. If you are more comfortable in the windup then this is usually because you throw more practice pitches in the windup. If this is the case, then I recommend throwing your bullpens in the stretch the majority of the time. This will also help you when you have runners on base. When runners are on base you must do your best to help your catcher to hold the runners on by being as quick as possible during your delivery. This means you may need to slide step. The problem is if you are a pitcher who likes to throw in the windup with a big leg lift, when in the stretch and slide stepping, you lose velocity. The key to not losing velocity in the slide step is focusing on the &#8220;Load&#8221; position. This position is when your hips are driving towards the target and you are squatting hard on your back leg. If you work hard to build momentum in the &#8220;Load&#8221; position, you can build as much momentum as you do with a high leg lift. This will help you get your lower half moving even faster to the target which will allow you to build maximum momentum along with optimal speed to hold base runners on.</p>
<p>It is important to remember that whatever you do to your delivery in the windup or stretch they must match each other once the hips begin moving towards the plate. If this does not occur then it will be very hard to stay consistent mechanically through the entire game. This will have a big effect on your balls to strikes ratio.</p>

Fast twitch motor neurons recruit more muscle fibers. This means more control of the body and also more explosive power. The biggest problem for a pitching coach, when working with a pitcher who does not have good hip rotation or who does not load and build a full body stride, is that this is the result of poor core and leg strength and no mechanical drill will fix this problem. Drills only help pitchers who are having a hard time changing flawed muscle memory. It doesn&#8217;t help pitchers who have good muscle memory but poor muscle strength. This is why we have weight rooms. This is why any coach who tells you that weight lifting will NOT help you as a pitcher is clueless and is wasting your time and maybe even your money. A good strength and conditioning program that incorporates Olympic lifts, plyometric training and an intense speed training program is estiental to developing good pitching mechanics. Good athletes make good pitchers.<span id="more-1311"></span></p>
<p>The two greatest pitchers of our time is Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. Their success came from their genetic make up and also their work ethics. Both of these pitchers had intense training programs. Roger Clemens was even using illegal drugs to enhance his work ethic and increase his improvements. Both of these pitchers grew bigger, stronger, faster in their careers and they both threw harder the older they got. This is because their work ethics improved their overall strength, which helped keep their flawless mechanics consistent and efficient. If they had slacked on their off-season training programs then you would have noticed a decline in their careers. This wasn&#8217;t the case and it is known today that they both where extremely hard workers.</p>
<p>Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens careers are proof that proper weight training and plyometric training will lead to a successful career. So why do coaches ignore this fact? Because they usually do not have first hand experience. If you want to be a high performance machine then you must train your body to become one.</p>

Yes, Tim is a new kind of freak but what he proves is that throwing hard can also be a little mans game. Tim is evidence that the strength and conditioning world is not just  hype. It is real and it is the fountain of success for any athlete. It teaches why someone like Tim Lincecum throws as hard as someone the total opposite in size, like A.J. Burnett. Why doesn&#8217;t Major League Baseball teach little guys how to throw like big guys? Because they do not have too. Major League Baseball is like a spoiled child. It gets the best of the best. Therefore, they have no need to make what they have any better. <span id="more-1213"></span></p>
<p>If you are a tall and skinny freak who throws 90+mph then stop reading and have a great career. If you are like most of us, average in size and believe you have the potential to throw a lot harder without causing injury, then you must begin to learn what the strength and conditioning world has discovered.</p>
<p><img style="float:left; margin:5px;" title="fasttwitch" src="http://up.topvelocity.net/uploads/2009/01/fasttwitch.jpg" alt="fasttwitch" width="247" height="190" />The strength and conditioning profession has proven that pitching is an anaerobic exercise. An exercise that does not involve oxidation. The systems involved in creating energy for pitching, during the anaerobic exercise, are phosphagen and glycolysis systems. This is the use of creatine phosphate and sugars to make ATP (energy). What this means is, if a pitcher trains these systems in the off season then the muscles will develop more fast twitch muscle fibers to support the anaerobic exercise. More fast twitch muscle fibers means you have a higher capacity and storage of ATP. You also have the ability to recruit more muscle fibers, to add to the intensity of the workload. More muscle fiber recruitment creates more muscle strength during exercise. This increased muscle fiber recruitment during exercise causes more damage in the muscle during fatigue and in return promotes more testosterone to be released in the muscles to heal the damage tissue. This will build more muscle mass for future damage control. These side effects of high intensity anaerobic training, without a doubt, will lead to an increase in velocity. This is why pitchers who get bigger, stronger, faster, throw harder. When I say bigger, I do not exactly mean larger muscles like a body builder. I am talking about muscles that are more dense. A good example would be a light weight Olympic lifter. They look like little kids and can lift like machines.</p>

You must learn the science of strength and conditioning for athletes. You must understand that if you need the most out of your body, you must learn what that is and what does it take. The first step in this process is questioning conventional wisdom and learning the science in everything you do. <p>Using the <strong>overload to underload</strong> approach to train the pitchers body and central nervous system to increase arm speed is the right concept but the wrong approach when using weighted balls. The problem with <strong></strong>using weighted balls is that it sacrifices the arm to teach the body how to move weight more quickly. To understand how backwards this weighted ball approach is we must first look at what role the arm plays in the pitching delivery.<span id="more-1152"></span></p>
<h2>The Role of the Arm in the Pitching Delivery</h2>
<p>The role of the arm is to get into position to allow for the transfer of energy from the lower kinetic chain into the upper kinetic chain. Once this energy has coiled the shoulder during external rotation the arm&#8217;s role is to deliver the pitch to its desired location. Never does the arm work to generate velocity except for using the elastic properties of the arm muscles when coiling during the energy transfer. To better understand the sequence of events through the entire kinetic chain, which leads to the top velocity of the pitcher, you need to learn the revolutionary approach to pitching velocity called <a href="http://www.topvelocity.net/pitching-101/">3X Pitching</a>. 3X Pitching proves that to increase the coil of the shoulder during external rotation the pitcher must first increase linear stride power and then transfer that power into core torque at front foot strike.</p>
<h2>Why Weightballs are a Waste of Time for Pitchers?</h2>
<p>Based on the understanding of how velocity is generated through the entire kinetic chain of the body stated above and also in the 3X Pitching approach, you can see that training with weighted balls using an overload to underload approach is a waste of time because it does not work with power pitching mechanics. Yes, this weighted balls approach may increase arm strength, using the weights, and may increase some arm speed, through training the central nervous system to rotate the arm faster, but the final result will be much less effective than taking a total body approach to velocity like with the <a href="http://topvelocity.net">3X Pitching Velocity program</a>.</p>
<p>I used the Overload Underload weighted balls throwing program for years when Dick Mill&#8217;s once preached it back in the 90&#8242;s. He now credits it to causing injury. It happened that I was using this program the year I torn my rotator cuff. I am not saying that this program was the reason for my tear but it did speed up the process of the injury. My problem was I had bad mechanics. I was an all arm pitcher and when I used this program it made everything even worse. The overloading with the weighted balls put more wear and tear on my cuff and in the end, even if I had added a few mph, it wouldn&#8217;t have been worth the extra wear and tear that came with it.</p>
<p>If you are looking to use weighted balls to increase velocity, I really believe that you are looking for the easy answer here. Increasing velocity is developing power pitching mechanics and also developing yourself into a power pitcher. I understand that this is many parents, coaches and players converns because it seems to be conventional wisdom but I will be the first to tell you that if you just do your research you will learn otherwise. It will also prove to you that those who are spreading these rumors about working out and pitching have not done their research. </p>
<p>When someone tells me that working out is bad for pitching I then ask them then why is about 70% of Major League Ball Players on Steroids or Human Growth Hormone? It isn&#8217;t because they just want to look good on TV. I then ask them why was the majority of the ball players listed on the Michell Report pitchers? I always get a few stutters followed by silence. <span id="more-858"></span></p>
<p>This does make a good point so I wanted to back up this claims with the list of pitchers who are on the Mitchell Report. It definitly does make a big statement. These pitchers where suspended for using steroids or HGH.</p>

<p>Believe me this is a short list. Think of all the Pitchers who didn&#8217;t make the list who are on these performance enhancers. If you need a reference to this information here are the links to the Mitchell report and all Pitchers suspended after the report came out.</p>

<p>I mean honestly, how could someone truly believe that strength and conditioning will not improve your velocity or speed? This is the only reason athletes take performance enhancers like steroids and HGH. Those of us in pro sports who didn&#8217;t take them where definitely tempted. We all knew that if you took <a title="Growth hormone treatment" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Growth_hormone_treatment">human growth hormone</a>, <a title="Nandrolone" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandrolone">Deca-Durabolin</a>, <a title="Stanozolol" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanozolol">Winstrol</a>, <a title="Sustanon" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustanon">Sustanon</a>, and <a title="Oxymetholone" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxymetholone">Anadrol</a> separately or all together before a workout, without dying, after a few months you would be throwing a lot harder. Notice I said dying. Yes, we knew it was dangerous and that is why some of us didn&#8217;t take it. Also because the league wasn&#8217;t offering us &#8220;No Namers&#8221; millions of dollars to play better.</p>
<p>It is just absurd to say that strength and conditioning does not increase velocity. It is even more absurd to follow that with &#8220;Only pitching mechanics improvement can do that while using mental rehearsal prior to each pitch with the<strong> intention of moving the body faster.</strong>&#8221; If your body is growing stronger, will it not have more ability to move faster? If strength and conditioning didn&#8217;t increase pitching velocity, personally I would have never played ball again after my rotator cuff surgery. </p>
<p>I am in NO way promoting steroid or HGH use to increase velocity. I believe this to be more destructive than helpful in the long term. This is why I recommend the <a href="http://topvelocity.net">3X Pitching Velocity Program</a>. The reason for the correlation of the pitching delivery to the car crash, is the car crash analogy really helps us visualize the complex dynamics of momentum transfer. The reason for the complexity is because of the speed of the event. The moment in the delivery when momentum transfers into the ball to start its propulsion to the target, is as long as a split second. The problem is analyzing this event for educational purposes takes a lot longer. So this is where the car crash analogy will help us.<span id="more-756"></span></p>

<p>To start the analogy we have a car, a hill and a wall. The car is sitting on top of the hill and the wall is built at the bottom. The wall is high enough to just peak over the hood of the car. There is a passenger in the car not wearing a seat belt. To begin, the car starts down the hill at full throttle. The farther it travels, the more speed it gains. It reaches the end of the hill and slams into the wall at full speed. The wall does not break or move. At this point I would like you to really visualize this event. I am sure you have good enough knowledge about classic physics to know what is going to happen to the passenger. Yes, the passenger is propelled through the windshield and flies through the air and lands about 40 feet in front of the car. <em><strong>So, why did this happen?</strong></em> Yes I could throw a bunch of scientific jargon at you but it shouldn&#8217;t be this complicated. The passenger flies out of the vehicle after hitting the wall at full speed because it was the only part of the car that wasn&#8217;t secured to it. Energy must go somewhere, so when the wall stopped the car, all the momentum transferred to the passenger because it still had the potential to move.</p>
<p><span style="float:left;margin:5px;"><!--adsense--></span><em><strong>How does this relate to pitching? Good question!</strong></em> The best way for you to understand this comparison is if I describe the correlation. Let&#8217;s start with the car. The frame of the car in the analogy of the car crash is the pitchers core. The hill is of course the pitching mound and the wall is when the pitchers front leg lands and stabilizes in his delivery. Now, the front leg is important in this analogy. It is playing the role of the wall. That is no easy role to fill because the wall, in this case, was able to stop the car dead in its tracks. So as the pitchers core travels down the hill, like the car, gains momentum, then the front leg lands and plays the role of the bionic wall.<strong><em> What happens now?</em></strong> Let&#8217;s continue to keep this simple. To understand what happens now we must label the last correlation of the car crash analogy. That being the passenger. <strong><em>What is playing the role of the passenger during the pitching delivery?</em><em> I will tell you! </em></strong>The ball is the passenger. The ball is along for the ride like the passenger and it also is the only part of the ride that isn&#8217;t secured to the vehicle or in this case, the pitcher. So, if the front leg does its job of playing the wall, then the ball will be forced to receive all of the momentum generated; in return reaching its top velocity potential.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-780" style="margin:5px;float:right;" title="81247729vd3" src="http://up.topvelocity.net/uploads/2008/12/81247729vd3-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="240" />You may still be a little confused at this point, so to help you pull it all together I will go into more detail about the wall. Let&#8217;s bring back up the event of the car crash again. Let&#8217;s say the car speeds down the hill and hits the wall but the wall does not hold. It gives away but manages to slow the car some. <strong><em>What happens now to the passenger? </em></strong>The passenger does not fly through the windshield. This occurs because the wall didn&#8217;t completely stop the car. It was allowed to continue moving until all the enegry created from the inertia of the car dissipated. Therefore the pasenger was saved because he wasn&#8217;t forced to receive all of the momentum from the car. This will be the same case with the ball, if the wall or leg does not stablize completely. This will mean the pitchers front leg will continue to bend instead of hold and the body will not transfer all of the momentum to the ball. For the pitcher to reach his top velocity potential he must stabilize from the front leg all the way up to the chin. The arm and ball should be the only part of the body moving after the chest has extended as far out as it is capable of going. Any hard thrower will tell you, there is a lot more to pitching velocity than just your arm. If you want to see significant gains in pitching velocity then read all of these key <strong>Baseball Tips on Pitching</strong> and the articles linked to it. The only way you are going to see improvements, is if you develop a good understanding of how pitching velocity is generated in hard throwing pitchers.</p>
<p>Remember you are bound by nothing. You have the ability to throw 90+ mph. Doctors told me I would not be able to and I proved them wrong. These tips will help you do the same.<span id="more-644"></span></p>
<h1>Tips for Improving Pitching Velocity</h1>

<h2>1. Change speeds.</h2>

This creates an illusion of velocity. By changing the speed of your pitches this will throw the hitter&#8217;s timing off and can make a 70 mph fastball look like a 90 mph fastball. Pitchers like Trevor Hoffman have made long major league careers off of this one tip. He is a master of the fastball change up combination. Use this tip for immediate effect while you work on the other velocity tips.</p>

<h2>2. Pitch from the ground up.</h2>

<p>We all make the mistake at a very young age, that to throw a baseball only takes the arm to perform the task. Then as we grow bigger and move up levels in the game, we find ourselves continuing to only use our shoulders and arms to throw the ball. This is a major problem. This is why we still have an incredible amount of shoulder injuries in the game. You must change your perspective. You must teach your body to recruit bigger muscle groups when you demand more velocity from your delivery. This begins in learning to pitch from the ground up. Velocity comes from forces added to the ball. These forces come from momentum in your lift leg and your push off the ground. You then must learn to transfer these forces into the ball. This is where velocity lives. Most young pitchers do not load at all. Once they lift their leg they fall towards the target. This causes poor velocity and arm injury. <h2>4. Building Core Torque.</h2>

The core is the area from just above the knees to just below the chest. This area contains the strongest muscles in your body. So it makes sense that you should use this part of the body to generate velocity. If the core is not mainly used to build torque, then the shoulder and elbow will be forced to hold the torque needed to generate velocity. <h2>5. Create more Elastic Energy.</h2>

This stretching of the stomach and shoulder is creating elastic energy in your body. The more relaxed you are, the more elastic energy can be created. <h2>6. Momentum transfer.</h2>

The problem with coaching someone on how to generate more momentum when pitching is that they have no idea how to control it and they get worse before they get better. This is why proper momentum transfer is essential for good velocity. If you leave any momentum in your body, then you have left some velocity behind. The Ace Pitcher component of &#8220;<a href="http://baseballvideostore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=1&amp;products_id=1&amp;zenid=50a909e354f9f984adcb439c7af60c3c">Stabilization</a>&#8221; describes how this momentum transfer must occur.</p>

<h2>7. Early elbow extension and Internal Rotation.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p>Most throwers believe that if they <a href="http://topvelocity.net/pulling-down-is-slowing-down/">pull their arms down</a> at release then this will generate more velocity. The opposite is true. High velocity pitchers release the ball earlier than low velocity pitchers after external rotation of the throwing arm. Which happens after momentum transfer when their chest is out over their toes and their arms are externally rotated. This means after your body has done its job you must release the ball as quickly as possible by allowing your elbow to extend up and away from your head. You must also begin internally rotating your arm, as soon as your elbow extends, so you can release the pitch with your thumb pronated down. This will protect your arm during the deceleration phase. <h2>8. Refuel your ATP.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p>ATP is the main source of energy for all muscle contraction. There are several chemical reactions that take place to produce ATP. When a muscle is used, a chemical reaction breaks down ATP to produce energy. There is only enough ATP stored in the muscle cell for two or three slow twitch contractions, or one burst of power from a fast twitch contraction. More ATP must be created.</p>
<p>To understand rest between throwing a pitch, first you must understand what happens during the delivery of the pitch. Initially your muscles use ATP to power the contractions but the levels of ATP available are limited. The cells have a very limited ability to replenish ATP during the activity before having to switch to other methods to fuel the activity.</p>
<p>Fortunately, your body can replenish ATP when you are resting. About 50% or half of the depleted ATP is replaced after one minute of total rest. Almost all of the ATP that the body can replenish (just over 95%) is restored after about three minutes of rest. I know pitchers can not wait that long between pitches, but the longer you can wait, the better opportunity to develope more velocity.</p>

<h2>9. Fast Twitch Muscle Fiber.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-669" style="float:right;margin:5px;" title="muscle_chart" src="http://up.topvelocity.net/uploads/2008/12/muscle_chart-300x136.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="136" />A proper strength and conditioning regime like the <a href="http://topvelocity.net/ace-pitcher-handbook/">Ace Pitcher Handbook</a>, is based around developing fast twitch muscle fiber. This is important for velocity, because when adding a little more velocity to a pitch, you must recruit more muscle fiber within your muscular system to make this happen. We have already talked about where that muscle fiber should come from, now you need to learn how to develop more muscle fiber in the correct places of your system. Spending most of your time in the weight room sitting on cushioned machines, isn&#8217;t the answer.
