Study Proves Pitching Velocity Decreases With Extreme Long Toss

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · May 21, 2013

Extreme Long Toss Decreases Pitching VelocityWell I took the extreme long toss debate to Baseball America. This was my latest article in the Baseball America 2013 Draft Preview issue. I have had a great response from the article. Checkout the article below and post your comments below!

Long toss is a very heated debate when it comes to the best way to develop the pitcher. There are two schools of thought associated with long toss. The amount of distance being the center of the debate. One school believes only short distance long toss is necessary to develop the pitcher and the other school worships max distance long toss, like Jobu in the 1989 cult classic film, Major League. If you are from the “Jobu school of max distance long toss”, then more than likely there is no source of information that will change your relentless commitment to this art form. If there is any chance you are on the fence between these two schools, the information contained in this article will open your eyes and change your perspective of pitching forever. Read more

Studies Prove Olympic Lifting Has Less Injuries Than Major League Baseball

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · May 15, 2013

Bryce Harper Olympic LiftingThere is a ton of misleading and incorrect information in baseball when it comes to the benefits and risks of explosive power training for the baseball player. Many coaches, especially those who played before the drug era, work hard to discourage their students from explosive resistance training. Especially when it comes to Olympic Lifting and their reasons are usually; its dangerous, it will injury you, it has no effect on speed or velocity, or we didn’t use this back in my day. This is unfortunate because for years Olympic style resistance training has been proven the most effective style of training when developing the power athlete (1,2,3) and if you have learned anything here at TopVelocity.net, you know that more power, equals more pitching velocity.

So, is all of these fears about Olympic Lifting as an effective approach to building the power pitcher valid? Hopefully this article will give you all the information you will need to answer this question. Just based on my experience using these lifts in my career to overcome a potential career ending rotator cuff tear and seeing the results of those I have trained to increase pitching velocity with the Olympic lifts has convinced me, but I do not expect my experience to convenience you. This is why I have done the research for you.

* Yes, that is Bryce Harper power cleaning with glow in the dark weights and no shirt on! Don’t know what he was thinking either and yes, the old school coaches are correct, his training has nothing to do with his monster homeruns. Its his pink wristband.

Study Proves Max Distance Long Toss Decreases Pitching Velocity

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · April 23, 2013

Max Distance Long Toss Decreases Pitching VelocityDoes max distance long toss increase pitching velocity? If I can throw the ball 300 feet does that mean I can throw 90 mph? Is extreme long toss actually stretching my arm out to help it grow longer? Does max distance throws help with arm strength?

These are some of the many questions I get on a weekly basis. I have debated the effects of long toss on this site for years but as much as I would hope the baseball world would turn the page, it just doesn’t seem like it is going to happen. I am writing this article for those who actually care about the science and research behind this conventional training approach to pitching. If you don’t care and you are one of those guys who is going to do max distance long toss your entire career, no matter what science says about it, then good for you and I wish you the best. If you are someone who actually cares about your success and longevity in baseball, based on how well informed you are, then this information below will be eye opening! Read more

3x Velocity Camp And 3x Program Review

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · February 22, 2013

On January 18th I attended a 3X Velocity Camp and I can say without a doubt, it was the best decision I have ever made with regards to my future in pitching.  Before I go into serious detail about my camp experience as well as my experience with the 3X program let me give you some short background information about myself.

My name is Kevin Schultz and I have pitched 4 years of college baseball and am currently training to try to keep my career going.  Throughout my college career I was always a high 80′s right hander.  To me, that was not anywhere near acceptable.  I wanted to be a mid 90′s guy, so I was always trying new workouts and new mechanics.  I also started video taping and became obsessed with trying to change using this.  I tried long toss, I tried 90 MPH club, I tried my own workouts, but nothing ever got me to 90+ let alone mid 90′s where I really wanted to be.  I then came across Top Velocity which I tried to pick what I could up from what was free on the website, because I was skeptical to pay a high price for more instruction just to continue to pitch in the high 80′s.  This went on for about 9 months before I had communicated enough with Brent that I was sure I wanted to come down and experience a velocity camp. AJ Martucci Hits 90mph with 3X pitchingAJ Martucci has been a member of TopVelocity.net for over 2 years but not until recently did he take on the 3X Pitching Velocity Challenge and committed to the entire 16 week program. At 19 years old he reached his first pitching velocity goal of 90mph. He reached out to me for an interview because he wanted to share his story so he could help others working as hard as him to accomplish the same goal. It turned out to me a great interview from such a intelligent, driven and wise young pitcher. There is a lot to learn in his interview and I bet we will hear a lot more about this guy.

To contact AJ you can find him on the forums under the name cutfastball23. Here is a list of the forums that he has participated in (Cutfastball23 Forums). You can also email him at theitalian23(a)gmail.com. Here is the forum where he posted his video of him hitting 90mph (Hit 90 MPH).

Study Proves Body Weight Is Pitching Velocity Factor

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · December 19, 2012

Body Weight is Pitching Velocity* Checkout 3X Pitching Podcast Episode 1 covering this article at the end of page.

You want to start increasing pitching velocity then start gaining weight. Yes, a study proves a high correlation between body weight and pitching velocity. The study states that larger athletes on average throw harder than smaller athletes. The case study also states that these larger athletes can generate more forces which can enhance pitching velocity.

This information shouldn’t be shocking to anyone but those conventional pitching coaches who still coach the game the way it was played back when hot dogs were considered a good source of protein. Yes, that was back win Babe Ruth was on the Yankees roster and not on the wall behind center field. These are those coaches who talk about the importance of long distances running and throwing a lot, to building “Arm Strength.” Read more

Training with Brent Pourciau at Guerilla Baseball Academy was one of the best choices I have made in my life. All my life coaches told me I was the “Crafty Lefty” and that I didn’t need to throw hard to get guys out. Honestly I got so tired of hearing it and knew I needed to make a huge change if I wanted to pursue a legitimate career in baseball. So I went down to work out with Brent and take the first step in changing my career. Read more

Bench Press For Pitchers – Pros And Cons

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · June 19, 2012

Bench Press for PitchersSo who is afraid of the bench press? Don’t be scared! There has been for years a lot of controversy around the bench press for pitchers. The conventional pitching coach describes the lift as a guaranteed career ending device, “It will destroy your rotator cuff or make you too tight when you throw!” You may have heard these exact words before coming from your pitching coach. The problem is this is just a lot of misinformation from coaches who are uneducated in the world of strength and conditioning.

The bench press is NOT THE BEST LIFT to enhance performance in the weight room but it does have some benefits for the pitcher. This article will cover the Pros and Cons of the Bench Press for Pitchers, so you can move past the controversy and start moving closer towards your pitching goals.

Dorsiflexion Is The Key To The Pitching Power Of 3X

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · May 22, 2012

Dorsiflexion Power Pitching3X Pitching is a revolutionary approach to increase pitching velocity which holds the secrets to power pitching. The foundation of the approach is using triple extension (3X) of the drive leg to enhance hip to shoulder separation and pitching velocity. You can learn more about the science behind this power pitching approach in my latest article called, Scientific Proof that 3X is Key to Separation and Pitching Velocity.

In another article here at TopVelocity.net, I defined a critical component to implementing 3X which is called the ankle kick. You can learn more about the ankle kick and it’s role in the 3X Pitching mechanics in the article called, 3X Pitching and the Critical Ankle Kick. Once a pitcher has learned the power of the ankle kick to the 3X approach to pitching and has used the 3X Velocity System (throwing program) to implement the motor coordination around the 3X Pitching mechanics then it is important to begin working on the fine motor skills of 3X Pitching to help the pitcher master the entire approach and have a significant increase on pitching velocity. The Secret To Increasing A Pitcher’s RPM’s And K’s

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · May 7, 2012

Secret to Increase RPM's and K'sThis is an exciting time for baseball because science is starting to have a major impact on the game. A sign of this impact has been the increase in pitching velocity across the board. We are hearing more and more about 100 mph pitchers coming out of high school and college ball today. Pre-Steroid ERA this would have been unheard of.

TopVelocity.net has been at the forefront of this cutting edge information. What we have done here is interpret this new scientific data into laymen’s terms to help the young pitcher benefit from it. One of the latest studies to come out, which shows the relationship of pronation speeds to vertical ball movements, is some of this cutting edge science that has been right under our noses but now that it is documented, it will begin to impact the game. Post-Activation Potentiation: A Pitching Velocity Phenomenon

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · March 20, 2012

My biggest pitching idol growing up was Nolan Ryan. I worshiped his Pitching Bible like it was, “The Bible.” In this book he lists his everyday routines as a professional ball player, from what he ate to his strength training program. This was the first time I had ever heard about a pitcher lifting weights. What absolutely blew my mind was when he talked about his weight training circuit he would do just before pitching a game. I thought this was revolutionary. Why was he doing this and was it the secret to his success? I never discovered the answer to this question until trying it in my own career and also learning about a muscle phenomenon called, Post-Activation Potentiation. Read more

The 3X To 2X Factor To Pitching Velocity

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · February 1, 2012

3X to 2X Pitching velocityIf you have spent any time on this site you have learned the importance of triple extension to building explosive power in the pitching delivery. The 3X approach to pitching velocity labels this as the 3X Factor to pitching velocity. It is the foundation to the entire approach but it isn’t the only factor. 3X Pitching also describes the 2X Factor to pitching velocity which seems to be overlooked by many who believe that increasing pitching velocity only comes in the discovery of one secret or one component. 3X is important and will have a tremendous effect on pitching velocity but in combinations with 2X it is what the elite pitcher needs to perform at his top velocity. 3X Pitching Mechanics Triggers To Benefit You Game Time

Brent Pourciau

by Brent Pourciau · January 9, 2012

3X Pitching Triggers3X Pitching is an advanced approach to pitching velocity. It is extremely effective but requires an insane work ethic to implement the 3X mechanics. It is hard enough to perfect the 3X approach when in practice, when in a game, it can almost seem impossible until you have given it enough time and effort. What makes game time so difficult is the stress factor. Stress effects the brain by overloading it with excessive stimulation. This means all of the new motor coordination, that has just been programmed, is out the window when stress shows up. The only way to battle this is to learn how to reduce your stress levels by giving your brain some triggers to simplify the mechanics commands to help stimulate your central nervous system. Read more
