So I was thinking, I need to put together a short program of about 4 weeks for my school team. After all, I start school in two weeks and we have about a week for signups and then we go into training the next week. Since I’m going to be like the team captain, and I’m also going to coach, I was wondering what I should do to put together a program so that new beginner players can boost their skill levels quickly. Also we have about half an hour to an hour worth of training, so drills and stuff need to be short and quick and also effective. It’d be good if I could fit in time to talk to the whole team about mechanics and their mental approach. I’m attempting to put together one at the moment, but I just wanted some ideas from you guys.

Oh yea, we only have around two sessions each week, but if I can, I may be able to force them for a morning workout, but it probably can’t involve any skill work.

Oh yea, (why do I keep forgetting to put everything) no weightlifting as such, but bodyweight stuff is perfect. I sort of have a program right now, but it’s probably not great is some sense, but anyway, looking for thoughts and suggestions from you guys.

It seems like you have a lot of limitations.

For skill based drills, you would obviously want to split hitters and pitchers up to do separate drills. Soft toss and drills for hitting off of the tee would be good for the hitters. I’m sure that you have a good idea for what to do with the pitchers. Also don’t forget to work on your teams fielding. All you would have to do for fielding drills is re-create game situations and have players line up to execute the play.

Instead of weight training you could do a lot of aerobic things such as jumps and sprints that are listed in the Ace Pitcher Handbook.

Good luck on coaching this year.

My suggestion is you apply the 3X approach to hitting. The cuts I occasionally take in the batting cage have gotten stronger since learning the motor coordination for hip and shoulder separation on the mound.

In fact, the 3X approach to fielding also works in my opinion. Personally, my footwork, and ability to make plays athleticism while fielding, has also gotten better since learning to load and triple extend, as well as stabilize my front leg. I

Find drills that implement efficient movements into their running, hitting, fielding and throwing skills.

good luck Z

How would you go about choosing players and cutting players? I know cutting players isn’t the right thing to do, but we can only take so many.

Oh, this sucks that you have to make this decision. Here’s the best I could think of:

Do what’s BEST for the team. And that doesn’t always mean keeping the best players.

Good Luck, Z.
