Should a third basemen ever try to hold a runner on 3rd base? | General | TopVelocity Baseball Forum

Hello,
My coach told me to hold a runner on third base last game. We were down 8 – 2 in the 4th inning with a runner on 1st and 3rd with 1 out.
My highschool coach however says at higher levels you never pick off at 3rd base.
Thoughts?
I didn’t find the right solution from the internet.

On any contact, the initial step ought to be toward the ball. The player’s energy will convey him either to the ball or toward his base. The extreme left half of the infield is the third baseman’s obligation area – anything hit between the shortstop and the left foul line is his responsibility. Assignment Land
