i taught mound maintenance to little league pitchers the last two years.  i too don't understand why kids dig a hole in hard dirt and then complain when their ankle is twisting because of the hole they just dug out.  my son learned to fix his mound and did so every game.  this year, when they built the new mound, they called my son and asked him to test it out, and they built the mound around his stride length and preferences.  i guess he left an impression last season for them to want to cater to him.

the mounds i think i hate more or the artificial ones that they pour little black rubber balls on.  my son slid into almost a split on his first warm up pitch last season at a state tournament.  one of the coaches had to clean off the rubber balls to keep him from falling again.

my next favorite was the ant hills in florida at the USSSA world series.  if Brent wouldn't have taught our pitchers how to work with that mound, it would have had a bad day of throwing high into the backstop.  the other pitchers didn't have an experienced coach to tell them how to work that mound and they suffered for it.
