Sidearm Mechanics | Page 2 | Talk Pitching | TopVelocity Baseball Forum

The point I am trying to make and failing at it here is that a sidearm slot that kills external rotation will reduce the pitchers potential velocity. Randy Johnson with a sidearm slot gets a ton of external rotation like all high velocity pitchers do. He is able to do this by separating his hips from shoulders and then keeping his elbow just above his shoulder even as he moves into a sidearm position. As for submarine and over the shoulder arm slots when the shoulders are tilted up or down it is easier to externally rotate. This is why these slots are more similar than the sidearm slot.
DURING THE WINTER OF THE EARLY 90’S I WAS THE WINTER CATCHER FOR DENNIS ECKERSLEY THE RHP SIDE ARM. HE SHOWED ME HOW TO HOLD THE BALL CENTERED IN UR HAND AND TO HAVE LATE MOVEMENT LEFT & RIGHT SO THEY COULD HIT THE BALL BUT NOT SQUARE. THROWING SIDEARN I COULD GO 7 INNINGS NO PROBLEM. MANY BATTERS THREW THE BAT INTO THE FENCE OR INTO THE GROUND AS THE POOPED UP OR HIT THE BALL ON THE GROUND TO 3RD BASE. EVERY INNING THE BALL WAS INSPECTED TO THE FUSTRATION OF THE UMPIRE WHO STATED THERE IS NOTHING ON THE BALL AND HE IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL, SO LIVE WITH IT!!
