okay we will continue the 3x system mechanics. but if i had to say one thing it would be that it is his extension that is where he is struggling with the most. He gets his force vector in line pretty well for it being flat ground. We’ve been doing all the extension drills. Im stumped about what to tell him and how to word it.

Tell him when his power to weight ratio is 1.5X his Body Weight he will have the potential to 3X before front foot strike and build optimal hip to shoulder separation.

okay also i was wondering. in the video of michell sewald on this site it looks like he is doing this downward action of the knee also. Is it just the angle? How much was he power cleaning and everything when he found an increase of his velocity? How much did he weigh? Was his power to weight ratio 1.5X his body weight because he is a pretty tall lanky kid.

Mitchell is 6’4 200lbs and he can Power Clean 250lbs. He is closer to 1.3X his body weight but couple this with a 6’4 frame and you get low 90’s. He can touch 94mph. He is also 18. We did not see his pitching velocity increase until he hit these numbers and his pitching velocity hasn’t increased sense then because his numbers have not gone up in the past year but that is his choice not mine.

Mitchell has a ton of issues. He worked hard when we went from 82-94 when he was 17 but after signing with LSU he has really slacked off. I truly believe he is an upper 90’s guy but he doesn’t seem concerned with his low 90’s ability. If he gets hit around a little this year maybe his attitude will change.

Miitchell definitely builds a linear drive through almost hitting full 3X. I am always pushing him to get more leg drive but he is not a max effort guy like I was. If you ask anyone who trains with him at my facility they will tell you how insane his stride and leg drive is when he turns it on. Here is a video of him from last year which shows him barely hitting 3X before front foot strike. He has improved sense then but you can still see he is driving or 3Xing off the mound. More evidence that Mitchell drives hard is he got turf toe on his drive leg foot bad this fall.

okay i understand now. how long does it usually take to add weight to your power clean. ive been doing it for a while now. ide say 10 weeks and have only got up to 195 max. im 6’1 210 ive lifted before so things like my squat (375lb), front squat (275lb), and box squat (355lb) have came back a lot easier after a one year break. But power cleans seem to be my weak spot. any advice on getting it up?

Yes, I am glad he coaches the Power Clean as a jump. The timing of 3X during a clean is as important as during a pitch. Here is an article I put together which will help you understand how elite athletes build optimal power through 3X.

so it could be possible that my timing in the clean is just off. I would think if i have numbers like that on my other lifts there is some sort of deficiency in my timing of explosiveness. So really i could be closer to producing 1.5 times my body weight than the power clean numbers are saying.
