In the first episode of the @Topvelocity #pitchingtips show we discussed some of the misconceptions of gaining velocity that guys have. A lot of people don’t understand what they are getting themselves into when they say they want to throw 90+ mph. Most people have little to no understanding that high velocity pitchers are some of the best athletes on the baseball field and becoming one is no easy task. They have a combination of strength, speed, mobility, size, biomechanics and joint stability that few other people posses. Our job is to teach you how to develop these traits, but people need to understand that we are trying to help you become an elite athlete and it simply doesn’t happen overnight. I know everyone wants the simple fix and the easiest route possible to their goals, but if it was easy then everyone would do it. Make no mistake, this is not an easy program, but if you put in the work and don’t give up until you get where you want to be as an athlete, you will be blown away by the results.
The Hard Reality of Throwing 90mph
Steven has a house that guys stay at year round when they come down to train here in Mandeville, Louisiana. So, he hears a lot of the misconceptions that guys have about gaining velocity. He has dozens of guys come and go each year. Some succeed and some give up, but the ones that give up tend to have a lot of misconceptions about what it takes to gain velocity. One of the misconceptions he hears a lot is that guys think they just need one tweak to fix their mechanics and that will make them throw 90+mph. That is very rarely ever the case. There have been a few people who have come in and already had the tools to throw 90+ mph and just needed some tweaks in their mechanics to convert their tools into ball velocity. However, the percentage of people who that happens to is probably around 1%. If you are coming to a velocity camp chances are you have something wrong with your body that needs to be addressed. Usually, people need a combination of mobility work, strength training, speed training, power production and help with their biomechanics to develop the explosiveness and mechanics needed to throw at high a velocity.
Misconceptions of Pitching at 90mph
Another misconception that Steven sees a lot that guys have about gaining velocity is they want to find the short cut or the easiest route possible to reach their goals. That is not how this program works or a lot of things in life work. If you want to be elite in what you do there are no shortcuts. We give you the road map to gaining velocity in this program. We show you all of the areas that you are weak in and need to improve in order to become a high velocity pitcher. We test your mobility, athleticism, mechanics and point out every flaw that we can see is holding you back from becoming a high velocity pitcher. There is no shortcut to addressing your personal weaknesses. You either attack all of your weaknesses and keep working on them until you turn them into strengths and succeed or you try to find the easiest way around your issues and fail. A lot of people like to gravitate towards what they are good at instead of working on their weaknesses and they get stuck where they are at forever. If you try to find the easiest way around your issues and don’t address your weaknesses you won’t see awesome gains and eventually get frustrated and end up quitting. Work everyday on improving your weaknesses and don’t give up. Over time it is possible to turn yourself into an elite athlete.
