  1. Explosive Leg Drives - High velocity pitchers and position players are better at using their lower half. We always hear that we need to use our legs but rarely can someone show us. Most slow softball players have weak front legs and are unable to stabilize the front leg fast enough.

It creates healthier arm paths and optimizes the energy transfer process. It does this by giving the legs more time to generate the power and the trunk more time to transfer that power to the ball. The softball pitcher still must learn to transfer energy through the trunk it is just a quicker movement due to the less range of motion as the overhand throw. To develop a more dynamic trunk you must not only generate more ground force reaction but fully mobilize the hips.
  6. Joint Mobility - From the ankle to the hips and trunk, joint mobility is a critical attribute to throwing hard. More joint mobility means more time to put force on the ball. The best analogy of joint mobility for the softball player is having two jets on two different runways. One runway is 100 feet long and the other is 300 feet long. If they both must reach 160mph before the end of the runway to take off then the jet with the shorter runway will need to accelerate quicker to 160mph. This would be the softball player with less joint mobility. This means less joint mobility, more joint speeds which leads to more wear and tear.
  7. Joint Stability - The biggest challenge in all throwing sports is having optimal joint mobility with optimal joint stability. These two attributes rarely come together with genetics. If it isn't an elite genetic combination then it is very challenging to develop unless you have hyper-mobility with poor joint stability. Joint stability is a product of strength training. It isn't that strength training immobilizes a joint like conventional wisdom leads you to believe but it doesn't create hyper-mobility in the process. You will need to additional exercises to your strength training to optimize joint mobility with your joint stability training.
  8. Power Production - You can never have enough power when it comes to throwing harder. The only reason softball has a velocity ceiling is because it test the limits of the human body. If the body could do more then softball would support it and even adapt to the increase in power. Power is a combination of speed and strength. It is the ability to not only push force but to push force in a short amount of time. This means pushing the body fast enough to transfer that energy into the object for launch or the softball. Power production is enhanced in adding heavy loads to the body in explosive movements. This remodels and hypertrophies fast twitch muscles fibers.   9. Motor Control - It isn't enough to learn the most effective way to enhance the kinetic chain to maximize ball speed. You must develop the motor control to perform it not only at an elite level of speed but perform it consistently every time. This takes thousands of thousands of high quality reps fully activating the body in these movements. You will only be able to accomplish this motor control development within drills that are helping the softball player to create the correct movement patterns.
