Ultimately, your pitching coach is your boss. If you piss him off, there is a good chance you may be out of a job. The problem is if he is a BAD pitching coach, he could jeopardize your career. It has happened many times before. The key is to keep the coach happy, while you find the best support you can, to help influence your career.
The purpose of this article is not to turn you against your coach, it is to give you some options on how to deal with the situation that a bad pitching coach could put you in.
In this article, I will help you understand what I mean by a bad pitching coach, how to please them while still improving your career.
What makes a BAD pitching Coach?
Someone who has no experience in playing the position at the top levels of the game, or someone who has no certified education of how to coach the position.
How can a BAD pitching Coach effect a pitcher?
Pitching takes a tremendous amount of muscle coordination. The body must naturally understand how to build maximum momentum and torque, to deliver an above average fastball to a specific location. It is a pitching Coaches job to guide the pitcher to reaching his athletic potential. This takes an expert understanding of the position and the athlete. If the pitching Coach is far from an expert then the chances of him being a guide to the pitchers athletic potential, is very poor. This could be detrimental to a young pitchers career because promoting bad mechanics, due to the lack of experience or education, will decrease velocity and cause injury. It happened to Me.
What are the signs of a BAD pitching Coach?
- No experience in the top levels of the game.
- No certified education in the world of pitching and athletic training.
- A poor understanding of Physics Driven Pitching Mechanics.
- A poor understanding of the physiology and psychology of his pitchers.
- Over throwing his staff of pitchers.
- Discouraging his pitchers from using a strength and conditioning program.
- Forcing his pitchers to throw more breaking balls than fastballs.
- Using Long Distance running to build endurance in his pitchers.
- Excessive amounts of long toss.
- A poor warm-up and dynamic stretching routine.
- Not educating his pitchers on proper athletic nutrition and rehabilitation.
- Not educating his pitchers on the mental game.
- Uses a lot of poor conventional wisdom to coach his pitchers.
What are the signs of POOR conventional wisdom of pitching mechanics?
These are old techniques of pitching, that have been proven throw science, to decrease velocity or cause injury.
This would be Coaching the pitcher to:
- Take the ball out of the glove and reach it to the sky.
- Get into the T position. Glove hand to target and ball to center field.
- Pull the glove hand in hard to your body, while pulling the throwing arm down to throw.
- Kick the back leg up high after release. He may even use a chair for the pitcher to kick his leg over, after release, to force this bad pitching mechanic.
- Keep your landing leg bent at release. Do not let it straighten!
- Pull your head down hard during pitch.
- Wipe your arm.
- Slam your chest into your landing leg.
- Move your arm faster.
- Drive your glove hand to the target.
How to PLEASE a BAD Pitching Coach?
I will be the first to tell you that this isn't easy. Due to the high percentage of BAD pitching Coaches in all levels of the game, ever pitcher will deal with a BAD pitching Coach a few times to many in their career. The best way to deal with a BAD pitching Coach, without him having an effect on your career, is not to avoid him but to please him. Here is some TIPS that will help.
- Do whatever he says when he is looking and then do what you think is best when he isn't looking.
- Study the game, the position, physics driven mechanics and strength and conditioning. Become your Coach.
- Do not let him catch you educating the other pitchers. Especially if he is a HOT HEAD.
- Do not screw around when he is around you.
- Do not talk bad about him to other players.
This is the MOST IMPORTANT TIP: - You must IMPROVE.
The hardest thing that any pitcher or athlete must learn, is that it is a rare case for you to find a Coach that will propel your career to the top levels of the game. This is because, they are just as concerned about their job as you are about your job. So if you want to make it as a professional one day, you are going to have to knock down a lot of doors. You will always find support but the only person that is going to help you get their is yourself. I will leave you with this quote from Nolan Ryan.
"Pitching in the big leagues is a dream. Preparing to pitch in the big leagues is a nightmare."
Pitchers Training Program to Overcome the Bad Pitching Coach
This program has helped tons of pitchers live the dream of throwing 90+mph and signing with a D1 University, getting drafted by a Major League Organization and making it back to Major League Baseball. Many scouts in all organizations of baseball have recommended this program to help young pitchers get to the 90+mph range to improve their value at the next level.
The reason the 3X Extreme Pitching Velocity Program works is because it is based off of science and it has been proven to develop the 90+mph fastball on thousands of pitchers. It isn't rocket science or voodoo, it is the real deal! The program comes with a high level workload of drills, lifts and exercises scientifically programmed to enhance throwing speed on the mound while developing an efficient pitching delivery. The format of the 3X Pitching Velocity Program is similar to the same approach Olympic throwers have been using for decades to increase throwing velocity. This approach isn't new to the sports world but it is new to baseball.
If you are serious about your career and are insanely driven to put yourself into an extremely small percentage of pitchers who are potential D1 prospects, top level draft picks or you just want to reach your potential on the mound then this program is the best chance you have to making your dreams come true.

Most of this looks good. It's possible that we may actually agree but that there is more information needed on one of your points. What is your beef with the t-position? Do you not want your pitchers to get their elbows to shoulder height? Personally, I think they should be getting to shoulder height at the same time. I think it encourages sound mechanic, and encourages good upper body rotation through the delivery. There is certainly a lot of misinformation out there that is used by pitching coaches, but I'm not sure I agree with this one point of yours. If you have a chance, let me know.

I really appreciate the comment. You bring up an important issue. The best example of this argument is Greg Maddux who never actually gets in the T- Position. This is why he has been able to have such a long career. They have found that throwing the elbows above the shoulders cause more damage to the rotator cuff because of the clavicle impingement. Also mechanically it makes it harder to generate torque. Notice in the first pic of Greg here that his throwing elbow is back and down allowing his back hip to open to the target. If his throwing elbow was way above his shoulder then he would not generate as much torque in his core. Greg doesn't lift his elbow until his shoulders turn towards the target. You can see this in his next pic here. Therefore the T-Position is bad mechanics because it reduces core torque and it can cause more wear and tear on the rotator cuff. Read my article on the safe zones of the arm to understand this more.
Great work. I've studied Maddux's motion before, but I guess I never paid enough attention to the level of his elbow at that point. I just spent some time searching for an image of Maddux in the T, and I can only find a few examples where he is close to shoulder height with the elbow, but never level or above. I can't remember having my opinion changed this quickly on something that I think I'm fairly knowledgeable on. Thank you!
Relating to generality of this article, is the balance drill not effective as well does it demote pitching velocity?
Yes, studies have shown that it hurts velocity and even accuracy.
I was thinking about purchasing this program, but Im getting too many red flags from the content. There are a lot of helpful tips on the site. I see no reference to sport mechanics, which tells me the lack of research to backup data. I see phase like ‘Physics Driven Pitching Mechanics’,which make me wonder what is ‘Non-Physics Driven Pitching Mechanics’? Physics is always a part of pitching mechanics, even if you have poor mechanics. The lack of understanding of Sports Mechanics really bother me. Not saying that the coaches do not know baseball, just not sure on how well they can instruct (Organization skills). Just wondering have anyone else notice the same thing.
James, Physics Driven Pitching Mechanics means they are built on physics not conventional wisdom or just theory. What do you mean by “Sports Mechanics?”
Sports Mechanics encapsulate Physics as it relates to the human body(Ex Bio-Mechanics). SM gives you a template on how to observe and apply those forces when developing a skill(ex. Pitching or Hitting). When I say forces, I am talking about all the external forces that must be accounted for when developing a skill, such as gravity, energy, air and even water and how to use those forces to help you achieve the maximum output with your body (internal forces with be things such as your body weight). Not to mention how to make sure you are not deviating from you body natural movement(which is the root cause of injuries). It seems if you are re-inventing the wheel for something Universities has research for years. Here’s a helpful links that give your more insight on SM (http://www.humankinetics.com/excerpts/excerpts/sport-mechanics-offer-a-performance-edge-for-athletes). Notice it encapsulates a lot of subject matter your site speak on, but it shows you how to address problem in a uniform manner (Ex: breaking a skill into phases for easy problem solving). Take a look at the Table of Content for the book and you will see everything from how to use those forces to nutrition.
So your are promoting a new term which is the combination of Kinesiology and classic physics. Not sure if I will start using the term but I would suggest you spend more time on my site because the entire 3X and 2X approach is built on this. Basically, you are preaching to the choir!
I think you may need a revision here with the advice on how to please a bad pitching coach. You make a list of all the things that make a bad pitching coach and then tell the pitcher to teach himself the right way to do things. The thing is, the pitcher would qualify as a bad pitching coach based on the things you list, specifically:
– No experience in the top levels of the game.
– No certified education in the world of pitching and athletic training.
I know you’re trying to sell instruction here but I think the right thing to say would be to find a qualified coach to teach you if you have a bad coach.
My point is a coach who doesn’t have these qualities will not do better than you working to educate and train yourself to an elite level.
